The Next to the Last Remake of Beau Geste

This '66 remake of a classic remake of a classic had a good cast for its day but never achieved the classic status of its predecessors and, in fact, led to Marty Feldman's spoof version of the following decade, THE LAST REMAKE OF BEAU GESTE.

  1. The sergeant's name changed from one version to the next... in the silent version (and the P.C. Wren novel) he was Sgt. Lejaune; in the Gary Cooper version, he was Sgt. Markoff (Brian Donlevy); and in this version, he's Sgt. Dagineau (Telly Savalas).

  2. Universal really went remake-happy in the 1960's. They not only remade some of their own properties (Winchester '73, Against All Flags), but also some of Paramount's (Beau Geste, The Plainsman, The Paleface).
