Ted Stellwag On Comics in '66

  1. The super-hero comics were getting some attention from the mainstream (non-comics) media and general public at the time. It was the year of the campy Batman TV show, the syndicated Marvel Super-Heroes TV cartoons, and fads for camp and pop art.

But Elmer Fudd, Bugs Bunny, and Porky Pig (and Donald Duck, Yogi Bear, and Woody Woodpecker) were still being published in 1966, and for years afterward. The superheroes did not "replace" them in the 1960's. Ted just wasn't paying attention.

Ironically, DC and Marvel comics carried the Comics Code Authority seal, while Dell and Western/Gold Key (who published most of the "funny animal" comics) did not.
