Star Trek Tracer Gun

Spotted at Atomic Flashback.com, I had several of these over the years, sometimes awith and sometimes without a STAR TREK tie-in. I still have  ablue one but none of the tracers. That was the problem. You could shoot 'em well but you could rarely find them all!

Adlai Stevenson

A seemingly odd choice for the subject of a comic book, UN Ambassador and perennial presidential candidate Adlai Stevenson had died in '65 and Dell regular Jack Sparling drew this 30 page bio/tribute comic.

Miss America

Beauty pageants were all the rage in the sixties. My mother never missed one and thus I ended up catching quite a few myself. The biggest was the Miss America contest. '66 saw the very first time that pageant was aired in color--except for those of us who still had black and white TV's. The 1966 Miss America was one Deborah Bryant--ironically the same name as my childhood "girlfriend" whom I would meet the following year.

Doctor Zhivago

Released on the final day of 1965, Director David Lean's epic romance remained popular throughout the year of '66 and in re-releases for the next 20-25 years. The picture made stars of Omar Sharif and Julie Christie and featured many impressive European actors from Alec Guinness to Klaus Kinski.

Asterix and the Normans

ASTERIX was still building in its worldwide popularity to become the biggest-selling comics character in '66 when this 9th collection of PILOTE strips, ASTERIX AND THE NORMANS was released.

Monkees and DC

The Monkees were all the rage in '66. Their own comic book was published by Dell but her ein this shot we see Davy and Mike reading a handful of DC's on a plane. I remember buying the WORLD'S FINEST issue at Lampke's Drugstore and the GREEN LANTERN at a Greyhound station somewhere down south while we were on vacation. This issue of GL was the first comic I ever wrote a letter to--it was not published.

Rose Parade Grand Marshal

Yes, I know we just made a big deal about the sad loss of Walt Disney at the end of '66 but in the beginning of '66, Unca Walt was the Grand Marshal of the Tournament of Roses Parade!
