Mia's Men

Actress Mia Farrow, daughter of former TARZAN co-star Maureen O'Sullivan, was just making a  name for herself in '66 when she surprised many by marrying the much older Frank Sinatra. Everyone said it wouldn't last. It didn't. In two years, they divorced. The image above was in LIFE in '66 before they were wed. Just two pages later saw the ad below featuring Woody Allen who would last a lot longer in Mia's life many years later before that relationship ended in its own scandal! Ah, Hollywood!

Super 6

A largely forgotten highlight of '66 was the Depatie-Freleng Saturday morning cartoon spoof, SUPER 6. Hopefully more folks will discover it now that it's just out on DVD. Here's a review at CARTOON RESEARCH.

Thor

Seen above is the very first issue of Marvel's THOR comic from the beginning of '66. To be fair, the series had been running for about four years already but the book it had started in was entitled JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY. By '66, mystery had been replaced by majesty and Jack Kirby's rampant imagination was allowed to go crazy with Gods and aliens and monsters.

Campbell's Vegetable Soup

In '66, this was without a doubt my favorite food, eaten several times a week out of a small green plastic bowl. My mother would heat it in a small pan, adding a full can of water. There would be enough for two bowls full and I'd eat them both with tons of saltines! Mmm-mmm, GOOD! To coin a phrase.

Peter, Paul and Mary-Early Morning Rain

Folk music became a major fixture on the public scene beginning in the late fifties with many of the great rock artists of the late sixties growing out of that scene. Peter, Paul and Mary, with their immaculate harmonies and classy outfits, helped to mainstream the music and continued to be important exponents throughout the decade and beyond. Here they are in '66.

The Dot Record Club

Dot Records was a bit behind the times in '66. In what was arguably rock and roll's biggest year on and off the charts, their record club offered Pat Boone, Liberace, Eddie Fisher, The Andrews Sisters, Harry James, Myron Floren??????!!!!!!! They switched to country in '68 and managed to last another 9 years before dissolving.

Amazing Spider-Man Annual # 3

One of my very favorite comic books of the year I first started collecting comic books. The Avengers try to recruit Spider-Man and test him by pitting him against the Hulk! Daredevil has a cool cameo as well. The all-new story is actually rather short and is backed up by two classic Ditko Spidey tales!
